Groundwork

Grant intelligence for Canadian artists.

Why we built this

Finding grants is one of the most time-consuming parts of being an independent artist. Deadlines get missed. Opportunities go unnoticed. Relevant funding sits undiscovered on obscure arts council pages.

Groundwork was built by Mark Klassen, a documentary filmmaker with 16+ years of experience, out of genuine frustration with that process (and maybe a bit of an ADHD brain). It uses AI to surface relevant grants, score them against your specific practice, and keep you on top of deadlines. So you can spend more time making work and less time searching for funding.

Who it's for

Groundwork is built for Canadian independent artists — filmmakers, documentary makers, photographers, musicians, visual artists, writers — anyone navigating the Canadian arts funding landscape across federal, provincial, and international programs.

What it does

Discovers grants

Searches the web and monitors funding organizations for new opportunities — Canadian and international.

Reads your screenshots

Drop in an Instagram post, PDF, or email and Groundwork extracts the grant details automatically.

Scores by relevance

Every grant is scored 1–10 against your artist profile, with reasoning and a clear next step.

Tracks deadlines

Keeps everything organized by urgency so nothing slips through the cracks.

Powered by AI

Groundwork uses Claude by Anthropic to power its grant intelligence. We think AI is a tool — and like any good tool, it works best in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing. The scores and recommendations are a starting point, not a substitute for your own judgment.

Access

Groundwork is currently invite-only and free for a small group of Canadian artists. If you have an invite code, request access below.
